Other Books

This category covers books that don't really fit into the above categories. They are neither textbooks nor bboks for beginners. Mostly they are one-person views of the world of valve audio.

The Tube Preamp Cookbook, Allen Wright: Vacuum State Electronics, 1997 Recommended

Available from the author at Einsteinstr 129, 81675 Munich, Germany, 100240.2562@compuserve.com

An idiosyncratic but excellent view of pre-amp design and various other aspects of valve design philosophy. Anyone thinkingof building a valve pre-amp, and especially a phono stage, should get hold of this book. Bizarrely, the German post office does not consider this to be a book at all, "because it contains product recommendations and a personal greeting from the author", but this is in fact an integral part of its appeal. (It also makes you wonder that the German PO presumably has people who read every single book that people try to post). In addition to a great deal of design theory and ideas, it includes several complete practical amplifier designs. It also includes the "SuperReg", a (semiconductor) shunted constant-current source design which the author recommends for any low-level audio design and which he can provide in kit form.

The Vacuum Tube Logic Book, David Manley: Vacuum Tube Logic, 1994

From the man who founded VTL, this book contains about 100 pages which are a kind of extended instruction manual for the VTL amplifiers, with practical and philiosophical reflections of their designer.. The remaining 80 pages contain elements of VTL circuits and data sheets for various valves and other components, taken from the manufacturers specs. An interesting read but not really a "classic" book.
Availability: I believe this book is now out of print, but it is readily available through the second-hand trade; expect to pay no more than $10-15.
